Shughart Thomson & Kilroy Attorney Combines Law and Science To Become A Registered Patent Attorney

Kansas City, MO-If Joshua McCaig wasn’t an attorney, he might be a scientist. Now McCaig is using his background in science to further advance his capabilities as a lawyer. McCaig has recently become a registered patent attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. McCaig, an associate with Shughart Thomson & Kilroy, P.C., just completed the necessary requirements to become a registered patent attorney and is currently the only associate within the firm with that distinction. McCaig is one of less than 100 registered patent attorneys in Kansas City.

“There is a growing need among health care and business professionals concerning intellectual property issues,” said McCaig, who practices in health care litigation and intellectual property. “In addition to being able to assist clients in drafting patents and advising on trademark and copyright issues, my litigation background allows me to work closely with clients to make sure their rights are not just obtained but also protected against infringement.”

McCaig has a B.A. degree in biology from Franciscan University of Steubenville, 1997, and a M.S. degree in exercise physiology from Ithaca College, 2006. He earned his J.D. from Ave Maria School of Law in 2003. In addition to his education in the sciences, his background also includes conducting research at a Fortune 500 company and a certification by the American College of Sports Medicine.

McCaig currently practices in both health care litigation and intellectual property. His work in health care litigation includes defending health care providers against claims of medical malpractice, as well as defending against regulatory and compliance complaints. He has assisted in successfully trying over a dozen cases in state courts in Missouri and Michigan and has frequently participated in alternative dispute resolution proceedings on behalf of his clients.

“There are attorneys who have a litigation background or a science background,” said Marketing Director Kathryn Anastasio. “but having a litigation and science background is an added value for clients.”
