Emerging Leaders meeting in Kuala Lumpur

Emerging Leaders from Latin America, Africa, Europe and Asia gathered in Kuala Lumpur in March and the the programme was packed. We explored practical networking, building your professional “tribe”, recognising genuine opportunities, protecting intellectual property, and the growing role of AI in shaping legal practice. Perhaps the most powerful reflection of the week was this: what do you truly deliver for your clients? It’s Asia, so of course there was karaoke. The MI Map in Motion

An early start to this year’s informal meetups has already seen MI member firms connecting across Mauritius, Chile, Cyprus, South Korea and Poland. These face-to-face conversations, without agendas or presentations, remain one of the most effective ways the network strengthens professional trust.  When members meet in person, understanding deepens, referrals move more naturally, and cross-border collaboration becomes commercially stronger. Exploring ideas, comparing experiences, testing assumptions. Our final Emerging Leaders meeting of 2025 enjoyed the warm hospitality of Mackrell Solicitors who created a setting that encouraged open conversation and fresh thinking. Our ELs explored ideas, compared experiences, tested their assumptions and began to see more clearly the direction they might take in a profession that never sits still.

The group moved easily across cultures and generations, supported by the simple strength of being in the same room.

Sometimes it’s not about the big things…

One of the real strengths of our network is the way members make time for each other when travel or client work brings them into the same city. 

These meetings are rarely grand or formal, yet they often do more to strengthen relationships than months of emails or calls.  Being in the same room gives conversations a different quality.  You learn how someone thinks, you talk and laugh together, you get a feel for their market, and trust builds in a way that helps everyone work better and more closely.

MI Gathering at the IBA Annual Conference 2025 in Toronto

Every year at the annual IBA conference, our local firm hosts an informal gathering for any MI members attending.

This year, Loopstra Nixson in Toronto created a morning oasis for us and got us all going with a breakfast reception, allowing us to network and ‘fuel-up’ for the day!

Thank you to Loopstra attorneys who came in force and welcomed MI visitors from Palestine, the UK and across Latin America.  The only disappointment was having no time to take advantage of their pool table in reception!
