New MI Practice Group for Estates and Trusts

Mackrell International (MI) has launched a new Practice Group specialising in Estates and Trusts. Experts from the network’s 90 firms will join forces to advise clients on the global implications for estate planning, estate and trust administration, charitable planning, off-shore trusts, international tax planning and estate and trust litigation.

The group is jointly led by Lorraine K Cavataio of MI’s St Louis member, Sandberg Phoenix & von Gontard and Natalie Payne of MI’s London member Mackrell Turner Garrett.

Lorraine K Cavataio said; “Estate and trust planning has rapidly moved way beyond being a domestic matter and regularly involves cross-border, often complex, issues that have the potential to touch a growing number of people. At the same time, the arrival of digital assets presents uncharted challenges. Being able to connect with trusted experts throughout the MI network means we can better serve our collective clients throughout the world whether through effective planning or dispute resolution.”

Each of MI’s 20 practice groups represents a centre of global excellence in its specific area. Expert lawyers work together on client assignments all over the world and regularly share best practice and emerging trends to meet client demand. The groups issue briefings on topical issues and holds complimentary client webinars.

Paul Heyburn, head of MI’s Practice Groups said; “Between them, Mackrell International firms have greater strength and depth than even the largest global law firm. Having an estates and trusts group in the MI’s practice group portfolio meets rising client demand and that’s exactly what the practice groups are designed to do.”

The group is already planning its first update on the status of the Brussels IV Regulation, which aims to remove obstacles in administering cross-border EU estates. EU citizens can arrange the succession of their estate’s during their lifetime as they can elect to apply the law of their nationality rather than the member state they died habitually resident in.
