Solidarity Binds
You could not fail to be moved by the work that James Berry is doing to build a children’s home in Tanzania for 300 orphans. Well, Aram van Bunge of Ten Holter Noordam is so struck by James’ determination, that he has persuaded his partnership to donate $2000 instead of sending Christmas cards this year. We are hoping his initiative might encourage others to do the same, either as a firm or a private individual. As Aram has said, “it would be great for the relationship between the members. Solidarity binds does it not?”.
A reminder of the Larchfield Children’s Home headlines;
• This is an ambitious eight-year corporate responsibility campaign to build a ground-breaking children’s home in Tanzania for 300 orphans aged 3 to 16 years.
• Phase one of Larchfield Children’s home, with its motto ‘Change a Life. Inspire a Dream. Build a Future’ will open by 1st February 2016 for 60 orphans.
• James Berry is now looking for donations and sponsorship to finance the completion of Phase 1 of the project.
• The total cost of Phase 1 is estimated to be USD 275,000, of which USD 80,000 has been received. He is therefore hoping to attract donations of up to USD 200,000.
• There are an estimated 1.3 million orphans in Tanzania who have lost their parents through AIDS or related diseases and are living ‘hand-to-mouth’ on streets or scattered settlements.
• Larchfield Children’s Home will be built on an 11.5 acre site in Mkuranga, just south of Dar-es-Salaam, where there is a concentration of approximately 2000 orphaned children.
• Local government does not have the resources to help, leaving these children helpless and vulnerable, living a life of poverty and little hope.
• Total construction cost will be $1.65 million spent in six phases of $275,000 over six years.
James Berry, who launched the Larchfield Charity Organision in 2012, said; “Children at Larchfield will enjoy a warm family-style unit with farming as a bed rock. They will have access to vocational skills enabling them to grow, gain confidence and serve their community with purpose and self-respect. By setting up this home we will make some impression on this chronic situation and give some children a chance in life. With the right support we could make this a model for others to follow.”
To meet any concerns about transparency or governance, Larchfield is incorporated as a British charitable company and registered with the UK Charity Commission. James Berry is personally responsible for any disbursements which are managed by Pricewaterhouse Coopers.
